Invest in Your Headwear
A well-made hat can last for years, but only if you take care of it. Dust, sweat, and improper storage break down fabrics faster than regular wear does. These straightforward care habits will keep your caps, beanies, and brimmed hats in top condition through every season.
Cleaning Baseball Caps and Casual Hats
For cotton and polyester caps, hand washing is the safest method. Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Gently scrub the sweatband and any stained areas with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly with cool water and air dry — never use a dryer, which can shrink fabric and warp brims. For a quick refresh between washes, use a fabric spray designed for activewear to neutralize odor.
Wool and felt hats require a different approach. Use a soft-bristled hat brush to remove surface dust, always brushing counterclockwise. For stains, a damp cloth with minimal water can be dabbed gently onto the spot. Avoid soaking wool felt — it can lose its shape permanently.
Storage and Shape
Store structured hats on a flat surface or a hat form to maintain crown shape. Avoid stacking hats inside one another, which can crush brims. Straw hats should be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the natural fibers from becoming brittle. For travel, invest in a hat carrier or pack the crown with soft clothing to protect the shape.
